I Tried 5 Different ‘Bruise’ Products. Only One Actually Worked.
Let me save you the money I wasted.
Over the past four years I have bought the Boots Arnica cream everyone picks up at the chemist, Hirudoid whenever another dark bruise appeared, a DerMend tube that seemed to be popular on Amazon, BruiseMD because a friend swore by it, and a drawer full of others I have thrown away. All of it to stop pulling my sleeves down every time another purple mark appeared.
Four failures. One winner. Here is the difference:

Individual results vary.
Why moisturiser and Arnica never fixed it
I got this wrong for years. I thought I just bruised easily. My skin was dry and thin, so I kept buying richer moisturisers. And whenever another dark bruise appeared, I reached for Arnica.
Then I learned there was actually a name for what was happening to my arms: senile purpura.
After years of ageing and sun exposure, the skin on your forearms and hands gradually becomes thinner. The collagen and supportive tissue underneath starts to disappear, taking away some of the cushioning that used to protect the tiny blood vessels below.
So when you knock your arm against the kitchen counter or catch it on a door frame, those fragile vessels can break much more easily. Blood leaks underneath the skin, and another dark purple bruise appears.
That explained something I had never understood.
Moisturiser was helping the dryness. It made my arms feel softer and less papery for a while. Arnica was helping me deal with the bruise that was already there.
But neither one was doing anything about the thin, fragile skin that made me bruise so easily in the first place.
I was constantly treating what had happened yesterday, while doing very little about why it kept happening again tomorrow.
Once I understood that, the way I looked at these products completely changed. I no longer wanted something that simply moisturised my arms or helped the latest bruise fade. I needed something that also supported the fragile skin underneath.
Softness sits on top. The real support has to happen underneath.
Nobody had told me that while I was standing in front of the shelf buying another moisturiser and Arnica cream.
How I compared them
I used each of the five for 30 days. Same arms, same routine, morning and night. Forearms, hands and shins, because the bruising never stayed in one place.
Then I did the thing I should have done years ago. I turned the tubes around and actually read the backs.
That is where it fell apart. Five products, all sold for the same problem, and only one had the right ingredients with real research behind them and was pleasant on my delicate skin.
Five questions, asked of every one:
- Does it contain ingredients that actually target bruising, or only ones that moisturise?
- Does it do anything for the thin, fragile skin underneath?
- Does it help rebuild the barrier, or only sit on top of it?
- Is it suitable & friendly for daily use?
- Is it worth what they are charging?
Four of them answered one or two. One answered all five.
